Skinny Bitch

April 15, 2009

Okay, so I made a decision to stop eating meat about two weeks ago. I’ve been vegetarian before, but that was about 5 years ago. I must admit that my motivation to go vegetarian stems from the fact that I can eat more if I’m eating vegetables, fruits and grains…okay, I’ll admit that I also made the decision to change based on the fact that it will help me lose these last 10 pounds. So, honestly my motivation was to jump start the tail end of my 40+ pound weight loss. All told, when I reach (what I think) should be my goal weight, I will have lost 60 pounds. That’s ALOT. I knew that if I wanted to make this change permanent, then I would have to work really hard exercising AND clean up my diet. So, I made the switch. I don’t believe in jumping in blind, so I bough Skinny Bitch. 200px-skinnybitch_coverI wanted to go about this change educated, and I have found the best way to do that is to do my own research. Okay, now on to my review….

The first thing I feel compelled to say about this book is that it is horribly crass, brash and completely irreverant. I found the use of normally off-limits words to be overkill (pardon the pun). I think that the authors were trying to lighten the mood of a very serious message. Getting past the language, there is alot of interesting infomation and one-sided research. If anything, this book has definitely opened my eyes regarding what happens in slaughterhouses, and the poor quality of life that those animals lead. This book by no means is going to make me run out and join PETA, though. It has spurred my interest…and I’m definitely going to be doing more reserach regarding their claims about the lack of  judgement coming from the USDA and the FDA. I think we have a right to know what we’re putting in our bodies. I also feel compelled to share that since reading this book, it will be a cold day in July when I consume poultry, pork or beef again. As my hubby says, ”if you don’t want to know the answer to a question, don’t ask”. I’m not saying that I shouldn’t have asked…I wanted to know, but I will say that as I was reading this book and my coworker was eating her grilled chicken, I turned green. Literally.

A warning to those who are curious but REALLY don’t want to read about what’s going on…simply put, don’t. Honestly, if you truly want beginnings of answers to your questions, then read this book. It’s crass, yes, but informative. If anything, it will make you want to do some more research. BUT if you want to be able to put that hamburger in your mouth…stay away (unless you are incredibly objective and completely unmoved by VERY gross descriptions of animals being tortured…not to mention the antiboitics and disease….*sigh* I don’t want to turn into a vegetable-thumper, here-I just want you to KNOW what you’re in for).

Lastly, while I am trying a vegetarian diet, this book pushes for strict veganism AS WELL AS no dairy (which I’m working toward) and no eggs. I think that a gradual transition would be far easier for most people…in addition to touting veganisim, the Skinny girls want you to go completely ORGANIC…which is not so much of a problem, unless you’re seriously strapped for cash (like me). I think that going vegan and organic are great goals…but I have to be realistic. I cannot afford to spend MORE money on groceries right now. It’s a goal that I’m working toward.

Overall, this book is an eye-opener…. If you want to start asking questions, I would suggest something a little less vivid. But if you’ve been asking them, then this is a must read. I will honestly say that I will read it again. I enjoyed my guilty little pleasure…it has not spurred me to veganism just yet…but it has definitely made it a future goal.

I was actually watching their videos when you commented! They look interesting…but I think I’ll wait to see some more reviews before diving in. I’m actually reading Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven right now. Alot of the same, but some new facts, which are interesting (and no, I’m not pregnant…yet).
