The learning curve

April 16, 2009

I have found that anytime you do something new, your brain (and sometimes body) takes a bit to adapt. So when I packed my lunch today, I grabbed what I thought was a vegetarian meal. I was WRONG…and frustrated because I just finished reading a book that stated VERY plainly: READ LABELS. BEFORE YOU EAT IT. EVERY TIME. NO EXCEPTIONS. (I felt a little like a kid getting scolded for reaching into the forbidden cookie jar). But the Bitches are RIGHT. *gasp* If I am going to succeed in truly being vegetarian, and eventually vegan…then I need to listen. Back to my point. I ate my lunch, which is supposed to be “Portabella Spinach Parmesan: 9 grain penne with baby portabella mushrooms, spinach & tomatoes, topped with parmesan cheese”. So I ate it.
UMMMM…YEAH.

THEN I read the ingredients: enriched penne pasta, water, baby portabella’s, spinach, tomatoes, red peppers, parmesan cheese, salted chablis, olive oil, corn starch, garlic puree, onion puree, lemon juice concentrate, salt, spices, sugar, CHICKEN MEAT WITH JUICES, CHICKEN FAT, whey, natural flavor”…UM…WHAT?! I did not even DETECT the slightest hint of chicken ANYWHERE in my meal!

Needless to say, I was am slightly incensed. I mean, WHY wouldn’t you mention the *ahem* CHICKEN on the label?! Seriously…I know it’s my own fault for not looking BEFORE I eat, but still. I think that I have a right (although it may be very slight) to be upset. Being newly vegetarian, there are lots of obstacles that I will have to overcome. I get that. But REALLY?! Come on, now. Hiding CHICKEN that far into the ingredients is just asinine.

So what have I learned? I’ve learned that in order to be successful, my best bet is to READ LABELS and buy organic/natural when I can (and my checkbook can afford it). Lesson learned.
