Vegan alcohol?

May 1, 2009

Many alcohol products are refined, strained or processed through animal products (such as bone char or isinglass). Which makes some of my favorite beverages NOT vegan. Sad day! alcoholNeedless to say, that while I don’t drink on a regular basis, I do enjoy a glass of wine or a gin and tonic on the weekends. So…I was THRILLED to find www.barnivore.com, which provides a list of vegan alcohol, wines and beers…and some not so vegan. It’s a great resource for those of us who want to persue vegan excellence in our diets. I was pretty bummed to find out that two of my favorite vineyards, Robert Mondavie and Barefoot are NOT vegan friendly. Thankfully there are quite a few that are: Fisheye, Duck Pond, French Rabbit, Moet Champagne, Pine & Post, Red Truck, Rustic Roots, Sweet Pea, and Yellow Tail *reds only*). And then I had to look into my G&T…or the many other drinks that I enjoy on occassion. I was pleased to discover that Captain Morgan’s, Absolut Vodka, Gordon’s Gin, Maker’s Mark, Seagram’s Gin and Tanqueray Gin, among MANY others…. I was SO glad to find that I can still go out and enjoy myself every now and again. Of course, if no alcohol was vegan, then I would be sad, but I would deal with it. This will definitely make the transition easier!!

What a cool site! I’m sad to learn that Yellow Tail whites are not vegan … and confused to learn that the reds ARE vegan.

I was disappointed by that, as well. There are plenty of whites that are vegan…if you liked Yellow Tail, Fisheye is pretty close and it IS vegan.

Wow thanks for the site! I first thought “oh, it will be all american brands”, but of course many brands are international. Thanks for the tip!
