I decided to start cleaning out my freezer last night, and as I was doing this, I came across some of my favorite things: meat substitutes. I had purchased them when I started to migrate my diet from omnivore to pescatarian/lacto/ovo-vegetarian. I was sad to discover that most of my favorite Boca, Morningstar Farms and Quorn products contain
milk and egg products. When I started to look further, I noticed that all three manufacturers are fond of putting whey protein and egg whites for bonding. This got me thinking….is that really necessary? I think not. I was pleasantly suprised that Gardenburger (my FAV!) veggie patties are vegan. And the Morningstar Farms Griller’s Crumbles and Chik’n Strips are vegan, too. I am finding that I am definitely more concious of what I’m putting into my body, and I will find sustitutes for the things I won’t eat. I really don’t see the need for dairy or eggs…so I’m not eating them. My husband is happy to eat up the non-vegan food in my freezer. Problem solved. I realize that I purchased most of this food before I made the decision to follow Eat to Live, so I’m going to take a moment to laugh and realize that nutrition labels MUST be ready EVERY SINGLE TIME I shop. Things change, which means that ingredients change…and just because it’s a meat substitute DOES NOT mean that it’s vegan. I love learning new things!!
