Breakfast

June 9, 2009

They (and by they I mean the people that write articles on proper nutrition) always emphasize breakfast as being the most important meal of the day. I happen to agree with that. It gets your metabolism going, helps your thumbnailtummy to start working and gets your body ready to use the nutrients that you take in for the rest of the day. Pretty important. Some of you may have noticed that I talk about having fruit for breakfast, and lately, I’ve been on a green smoothie kick (thanks Irene!). Prior to my smoothie habit, I had been having a grapefruit and banana for breakfast. While satisfying, I was having trouble getting my greens in. Since I know how important greens are for protein as well as for the micronutrients they provide, I’ve been trying to eat more of them. This is all fine and good…well, it was, until I realized that I couldn’t quite force myself to eat 3 HUGE (think 3+ cups/meal) salads every day. Then I started hearing about green smoothies. I LOVE green smoothies!! There are so many great recipes out there (check out Kristen Suzanne’s EASY Raw Vegan Smoothies, Juices, Elixirs & Drinks: The Definitive Raw Fooder’s Book of Beverage Recipes for Boosting Energy, Getting … or Cutting Loose… Including Wine Drinks!), but you can just as easily make your own. My current favorite is 1 cup of spring mix salad, 1/2 c strawberries, 1/2 c raspberries, 1 c plain soymilk (for the Vitamin D), water & 1 stevia packet. LOVE IT!! You can’t even taste the greens!! It does turn out more purple than red, but I’m okay with that. In addition to the smoothies, I have also been maintaining my daily grapefruit, because, well…I LOVE GRAPEFRUIT! If you’ve never tried green smoothies, give them a shot. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

I’m kind of scared of green smoothies…and I’m not sure why, because I really like green stuff. It might be the idea of the consistency thing……but I might try it. Just for you. : P
