The truth about Atkins
I will admit that prior to becoming vegan (or even vegetarian!) I attempted the Atkins diet fad. It was HORRIBLE, and I lasted less than 3 days. I just don’t like meat…which is a great thing now that I’ve come to peace with that revelation. I am still fascinated by all the people out there who still buy into the myth that a lack of carbohydrates is somehow the magic pill. Most of the sane people in the world realize that eating animal products are wholly unhealthy…at least, I hope they do. Feeding my interest in the whole debacle that is low-carbohydrate diets, I picked up what turned out to be an amazing find. Carbophobia: The Scary Truth About America’s Low-carb Craze focuses on debunking (not terribly difficult, in my opinion) the low-carb myth. The book does a great job of being down to earth, slightly humorous and thought-provoking. Additionally, I learned some interesting facts that I wouldn’t have otherwise gleaned (at least, not without years and years of my own research…and frankly, I don’t have time right now). Did you know that there are absolutely no recognized studies that promote low-carb diets? Or that The American Heart Association has linked a high carbohydrate diet to a reduction in all mortality rates (from many, if not all, diseases)? Pretty interesting. If you’ve been looking for a “quick fix” this book will give you hope that eating well and providing your body with the proper nutrients will DEFINITELY make sure that you’re eating well and getting some answers to those burning questions. It was a fun, quick and enjoyable read…and I’ll probably read it again! It’s great for being purse-sized (good for waiting rooms or job interviews!).

I think for normal people this might be a good thing, but with having insulin resistance/pre-diabetes, my doctor told me to try to eat around 100g of carbs a day. I just don’t think my body deals with carbs well and I can SO feel it when I eat something loaded with carbs. I kind of get a sugar high/drunk feeling. Since I have been eating clean and on the restrictive part of Tracy’s diet (she doesn’t want you eating a ton of carbs except in fruits and veggies…which I’m eating A LOT of) I haven’t had any of my horrible drunk-carb feelings. And I haven’t had my low blood-sugar bottom-outs where I’m shaking. I have heard the idea to be careful when cutting carbs, but I may be a little bit of a different case. Do they mention diabetes at all in the book?
Not very in-depth, actually. I think that I did a review of Eat to Live a bit ago…I would look into that book, or check out Healthy Eating For Women For Life. Either of those should answer any questions that you have!
I did Sommersize a while back. Lean meats, whole grains, no sugar. Lost a pretty good amount of weight on it. But gained it back. Not because the program doesn’t work. I went back to eating unhealthy. I know that if I eat a lot of bad carbs like white flours and junk food (chips, donuts, etc) I feel horrible.
atkins is scary, yikes! it is amazing how people still have that mindset. that looks like a good book. i never really got that craze, it was just too off-putting to think that you were doing your body justice pigging out on bacon and bunless burgers. bleh.
i do try my best to avoid refined carbs or any refined foods for that matter. i drink the low carb/light beers just coz they are lower in calories and not so heavy. i haven’t weighed myself since early in june, my husband hid the scale. just putting my focus on half marathon training and fitness goals. so far so good, except for this cold/cough i have, ugh, seems when you get going good you hit a roadblock!
i am reading fit for life (bargain score at grocery store for $2.50!) right now and then onto skinny bitch, yay!
