So. Today marks day 1 of my 30 day adventure with Whole30. What was I thinking?
I know, I know. I will feel amazing when I’m done. But. That doesn’t mean that I’m not a little scared. Okay, I’m a lot scared. I love rice, and beans, and I’m a self-proclaimed sugar addict. I’ve also been working with my doctor to figure out why my vitamin D and B levels are so low, but that’s another story for another time.
Her solution for now is to get my Whole30 on and then we can address any imbalance. So, here goes nothing, right?
…can I tell you a secret?
Last night I was laying in bed, wide awake worried that I couldn’t do this. But you know what? My dad has a great saying. He always tells me to never take myself out of the game. So I’m going to heed his advice, and focus on making this work one day at a time. In the grand scheme of things, 30 days is a blip on the radar.
I started by pouring over blogs that had gone through (and survived) at least one round of the Whole30. I found some great advice:
“Am I hungry enough to eat some grilled fish and veggies right now?” If the answer is yes, you’re truly hungry, go eat a healthy snack. If the answer is no, you’re just having a craving, so go find something else to do to take your mind off of it.” from The Nourishing Home.
“Set aside a few hours every week and focus on preparing individual ingredients and one or two “big batch meals”. Keep everything in separate containers and then assemble meals as needed the night before. You can’t “wing it” as easily because some food is “off limits” – so plan ahead. Before I go grocery shopping I always figure out what I have on hand first, next I make a “flexible” meal plan, then I shop, finally I prepare.” from The Little HoneyBee.
“Do not go into this program feeling like you’re going to jail. Instead go into this program excited to change your life. This program can do great things for you like break addictions to sugar and chemicals, help aid weight loss and get you on a healthy path. These are great things. Do not let your addictions talk you into thinking this is painful.” From Fat to Finish Line.
I think my favorite piece of advice came from Holly Would If She Could, when she said to “just focus on the first 2 weeks.“
Everyone recommended that I read It Starts With Food, so I did. I loved it. If you’re going to do this, then you really need to commit, and for me, the science was necessary so that I understand why I am giving up some of my (current) favorite foods.
So that’s what I’m doing. I’m getting excited to change my life. To feel better, move better, just be BETTER. I cleaned out my cupboards (most of them, the boys still have some beet pancakes), and donated a TON of food to the local food pantry. Then, I prepped.
I prepped breakfasts, lunches, and figured out our dinner menu. We now have some awesome bacon and egg cups, mini frittatas, and even some egg-wrapped sausages.
For lunch, we have some super-yummy tuna cakes, egg salad (made with Paleo Mayo), and grilled chicken with veggies.
Dinners will be more of a challenge, but I’m trying to focus on make-ahead meals, and foods that will be good as leftovers.
