Over Thanksgiving, I was introduced to some amazing okra brownies made with the illusive Trim Healthy Mama Baking Blend. Y’all. They were TO.DIE.FOR. And I hate okra. Seriously hate it. It’s right up there with spiders and snakes in my book. Just NO.
Now, okra is generally slimy…which makes it an amazing veggie-it coats your digestive tract and may actually help to heal leaky gut. So I knew that I needed to find a way to to get it into my body…just not in a way that we southerners typically eat it.
Back to my story. Thankfully, my dear friend didn’t tell me that they had okra in them (as a main ingredient!) until after I’d had one…okay fine two. They were amazing. Then, another dear friend who is very, very health conscious posted on the Facebook.
Her story is incredible. She lost an amazing amount of weight with minimal exercise. And if she was okay with it, then I felt that maybe I needed to check it out, too.
Trim Healthy Mama Isn’t New
Now, I’d heard of the Trim Healthy Mama (THM) Plan before now, but I’d done some (very minimal) research and immediately decided that I was not going to spend nearly $40.00 on a book that made the claims of so many books before it, and encouraged the use of proprietary “blends” such as sweeteners, gluten-free baking blend, protein powders, de-fatted peanut flour, and more.
So, I got on Amazon.com and took a look. I was shocked to discover that both books were less than $30.00 TOGETHER. Obviously I quickly ordered both Trim Healthy Mama Plan and Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook. I needed to see what this was all about. I’ve got to say, so far, I’m impressed. The only problem I’m coming up with is the fact that their blends seem to be constantly sold out.
And although the plan has “NSI” or “No Special Ingredients” options, many of the recipes call for these blends. I opted to get a few “substitutes” to get me up to speed so that I can follow the plan and actually eat sweets once in awhile.
Trim Healthy Mama Special Ingredients
Instead of the THM whey isolate, I opted for IsoPure 100% whey isolate protein powder. It seems to be nearly identical to the THM branded version (and it’s available on Amazon here). I also chose a Stevia/Erythritol sweetener blend. I’m still not sure how I feel about this, and I will not be feeding it to the boys, but I will use it in the single-serve recipes and see how I feel.
The only thing I wasn’t able to find was the Trim Healthy Mama Baking Blend for sale anywhere (believe me, I scoured the internet!). Which is super frustrating, because everything I want to make (like okra brownies!) calls for this blend. Regular flour wasn’t going to cut it.
Thankfully, I was able to find the ingredients and nutrition information through their website, but they were sold out of the actual blend.
Which sucks. So I set out to make my own. When I did the calculations, this recipe is nearly identical in nutrition information, and it ended up being a lot cheaper than buying the blend (which wasn’t an option as of right now since it’s currently sold out across the board). Rather than keep this to myself, I thought I’d be nice and share what I’ve learned with all of you. Enjoy!
