I’m completely addicted to body scrubs right now. When Texas finally cools down and the air gets dryer, I end up with patchy, flaky skin.
It’s really not cute at all, and I have been using a lot of coconut oil to help my skin retain moisture…but it just isn’t enough. I needed to actually exfoliate, and since I refuse to keep those creepy shower poufs in the house (hello bacteria!), I had to get creative.
I store my homemade creations in glass jars, which means that they really aren’t shower safe…which puts a damper on my sugar scrub addiction.
Last week I noticed that there was a huge trend toward sugar scrub cubes rather than a pot of the scrub. My only thought was whether or not I had a silicone mold that was the right size.
Sugar scrubs are generally super easy to make with a few basic ingredients, plus they’re great for dry winter skin.
Sugar is a gentle exfoliator that polishes the skin, sloughs away dead skin cells, and leaves your body feeling soft (not scratchy).
I use three ingredients to help ensure maximum moisture:
Plus, these single-use sugar scrub cubes can be stored in a glass jar where they’re safe – on your counter or in your bathroom cabinet. You only need to grab one or two per shower and you’re good to go.
DIY Sugar Scrub Cube Recipe
- 1/2 pound glycerin, cut into small cubes
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/2 cup jojoba oil
- 10 drops vitamin E oil
- 2 cups organic cane sugar + extra for embellishment
- 30 drops of your favorite essential oils
Melt the glycerin in a double boiler and remove from heat. Add your shea butter and stir until completely melted. Next, add the jojoba oil and vitamin E. Stir to combine.
Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then pour into a clear glass mixing bowl. Add the essential oil(s) and sugar.
NOTE: Once you add the sugar, the mixture will start to set up very quickly, so make sure that you have your mold ready.
Freeze your cubes for approximately 30 minutes, then pop your sugar scrub cubes out of the molds.
Roll each cube in more cane sugar-this will give your cubes a little added oomph and sparkle (plus it’s just fun).
Store in an airtight glass container.
Adding The Right Essential Oils
Depending on which essential oils you choose, you can make sugar scrub cubes that will be energizing, calming, soothing, fight cellulite, and more:
- Use 12 drops lavender + 12 drops lime + 6 drops spearmint for a calming and uplifting scent
- Use 10 drops rosemary + 20 drops lemon for an energizing scent
- Use 20 drops lavender + 10 drops cedarwood for a relaxing sugar scrub
- Use 12 drops grapefruit + 4 drops cypress + 12 drops juniper + 4 drops rosemary to help reduce cellulite
- Use 10 drops orange + 10 drops bergamot + 5 drops ylang ylang + 5 drops lavender for a bright scent

Using Your Sugar Scrub Cubes
You only need one or two cubes per shower for your whole body. To get the most out of your scrub, wash your hair and skin as normal, then turn off the water or redirect it, then smush the cube with your hands and gently rub it anywhere you need moisture and a little scrub.
Be sure to rinse your body well so that you don’t end up sticky when you get out of the shower. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel to retain as much moisture as possible.
