If you are a busy, active mom like myself the idea of sliding casually through the drive through for a coffee or a Coke to help us stay awake is pretty enticing. Of course, we all know that Coke isn’t very healthy for us.
While I’m not a huge soda person, I do drink a lot of coffee. I believe the correct measurement for the amount of coffee I consume on a daily basis is “butt load”. Like I said. It’s a lot.
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with fruit infused water to help me drink more, well, water. And less coffee.
We all know that water is so good for you, but it can be so hard to actually drink water. Many people don’t like the taste of water. I get it. It honestly usually doesn’t taste like anything…or, if it does have a ‘flavor’ (and I’m using the term loosely here), it’s not pleasant.
Infusing water with fruit is not only easy, but it will help you adjust to drinking more water on a regular basis. As an added bonus, fruit infused water helps you sneak in some awesome antioxidants and it may even help you detox.
Drink More Water
Did you know by the time you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated?
That shouldn’t be surprising. Your body is 75% water.
Your body does not function well when you are running around without proper hydration.
TIP: Drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water. (If you weigh 160 pounds, then you need to drink 80 ounces of water each day.)
How To Infuse Your Water
Infusing water with fruit is way easier than it seems. Seriously! To make fruit infused water, all you need do is slice up your chosen fruit, then add it to an infusion pitcher or add an infusion ball to a glass of water or a water bottle, and refrigerate for 4 hours. You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you wish to get a deeper flavor.
Here are some of my favorite fruit infusions:
- Raspberry + lime
- Mint + kiwi
- Basil + mango
- Cucumber + mint
- Orange + lemon
- Ginger + cucumber
- Pomegranate + mint
- Strawberry + lime
- Grape + cucumber
- Blueberry + lime
- Strawberry + peach
If you’re feeling adventurous, try some of these more adventurous combinations (the orange + cilantro is so good!):
- Orange + cilantro
- Grapefruit + rosemary
- Blueberry + lavender essential oil
- Peach + sage
- Apple + ginger
Once you’re done drinking your water you can eat the fruit, though I find that some fruits become bland or even mushy. I prefer to compost my fruit (I use this countertop composter) instead of throwing them in the trash.
To help you have a successful first-time infusion experience, here are some additional tips:
- To avoid bitter flavors, make sure that you cut the rind off of citrus fruits before adding it to your infuser.
- If you don’t have time to cut off the rind, shorten your infusion time to 4 hours (and no more!).
- If you want to reuse your fruit, simply add water to your glass or pitcher. Remember that each time you do this you will lose some flavor.
- Using fresh fruit is best since frozen fruit will not release as much flavor and may also fall apart more easily.
- Freeze dried fruits are awesome for infusing. I actually feel like my waters are more potent when I use them. You can pick up some of my favorite freeze dried goodies HERE.
