No one can afford to ignore preventive care, however. This is one type of prevention that is worth the investment. The following list contains some of the most important forms of preventive checks to make sure you prioritize as soon as possible.

Chronic Illness

Statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control paint a very vivid image of just how important it is to make sure that preventive healthcare is a priority. According to the statistics that the center collected, 70% of all deaths in the United States are due to some kind of chronic disease. All deaths caused by chronic disease equal half of the country’s population, and the range of different diseases includes everything from diabetes to heart disease.


The earlier that breast cancer can be detected, the better the potential prognosis. It is wise for women between the ages of 50 and 75 to get a mammogram at least once every two years to stay ahead of the curve.

Blood Pressure

Cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of all chronic illness-related deaths in the world, and unfortunately, many of these cases are due to preventable issues with high blood pressure. In addition to heart attacks, blood pressure can also create complications in the kidneys and eyes. Getting a single blood pressure check can take out a couple birds with one stone.

Bone Density

With a bone density examination, you can have a doctor examine your particular risk for osteoporosis. Women over the age of 65 are generally at the most risk for osteoporosis, though depending on your genetics, you may have a more pronounced and need at an earlier age.

Colon Examination

Out of all of the different forms of cancer, colon cancer is the second most common form of them all. After the age of 50, you are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer and there are a number of different tests for getting the colon examined, ranging from a colonoscopy to a sigmoidoscopy. Getting an examination every 5 to 10 years is a wise plan for covering your bases.

Cholesterol Check

Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the United States, and there is no risk factor that contributes more to the chance of heart disease than excessive cholesterol. Of all preventive healthcare procedures, cholesterol testing is recommended to be done at the earliest age. After age 20, it’s recommended to get a cholesterol test at least once every 4 to 6 years or so. Cholesterol checking can be done with a simple blood test.

Pap Tests

Like other forms of cancer, cervical cancer can be addressed more easily if it is detected at an early stage. Pap testing is a perfect way to make this happen. The risk of cervical cancer does reduce with age, but that doesn’t reduce the need for routine Pap testing. Much like colon testing, Pap testing can be done once every five years or so to keep up to date properly.

Even though the range of different risks for health complications in the population is very diverse, the leading risk factor is negligence. No matter how confident you may be in the stability of your health, getting preventive care will be essential to justifying that confidence in the long term.
