I take a lot of supplements. A.LOT.OF.THEM. Between my Hashimoto’s and anemia (it’s the chicken or the egg argument), my body just does not absorb nutrients from food like it’s supposed to. So, I supplement.
And I thought I was doing a great job-I was choosing chelated (pre-broken down) minerals and vitamins so that my body wouldn’t have to work hard to use them…but my labs didn’t change. At all. My levels stayed the same.
So we increased the amount of pills I was taking each day. This seemed counter intuitive to me, especially since most vitamins contain fillers…which aren’t so great for you.
That aside (for now), I was taking so many pills every day that I literally could not fit them all into a pill case. This was just not good. Talk about inconvenient! When I have to leave the house, I either have the joy of lugging a million bottles of pills (not literally), or bringing multiple pill boxes. Neither is appealing, thankyouverymuch.
So I’ve been looking for something better-something that would help my poor body more readily absorb nutrients, and hopefully take up less space in my cupboard.
Plus, did you know that many “trusted” brands of vitamins include fillers? Fillers help bind and deliver the actual vitamin that your body needs…but they’re not great for you, and they could be potential allergens.
4 Supplement Fillers You Need To Avoid
The most common fillers found in supplements today are:
- artificial colors
First of all, why on earth are there artificial colors in your VITAMINS? Does your digestive system care what color your supplement is? No. So let’s agree that those have no place in your daily vitamin routine.
- magnesium stearate
Magnesium stearate is used as a lubricant so that the vitamins won’t stick to the machines that make them. It does not belong in your body. Plus, it’s CHALK. Ew.
- hydrogenated oils
You’ve likely been avoiding hydrogenated oils in your foods…so why would you take them in supplement form?
- titanium dioxide
There is some research being done that has shown that titanium dioxide can actually interfere with the body’s immune function…and when you consider that Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease…that’s a big fat no to going in my body.
Now, I haven’t even mentioned the allergens that are hanging out in the pills in your medicine cabinet. Did you know that soy is used with abandon as a filler (see above)? Or dairy? Lactose is a common form of delivery for many vitamins (and homeopathic remedies).
For people who have an overactive immune system (like moi), or those who have severe allergies…this just seems like a really, really bad idea.
So I’ve been looking like crazy for a better alternative.
A Better Supplement
What if there were vitamin formulas that contained high-quality ingredients that were also soy free, gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, and non-GMO? It sounds too good to be true, huh? What if you could get all of this goodness without all the crap?
It sounds like a dream, and it was…and then I came across a unique vitamin delivery system. One that doesn’t use pills. It literally uses a shot glass.
Not only does it eliminate all the gross fillers that I want to avoid, but it has a much higher absorption rate than pills or gummies. Plus, NO allergens.
