I have a confession to make: I miss peanut butter. Like, I really, really, really miss it. But, since doing my first Whole30, my body just isn’t having anything to do with peanut butter. It’s like a revolt, people. Best not to have it, in my opinion (and the opinion of the boys).
Before my Whole30, I hated the taste of almond butter. Hated. Almond butter reminded me of eating flax seed meal. Not pleasant, and not creamy. And definitely not Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful…which I may or may not have purchased from Amazon by the case.

Thankfully, my palate has changed, so now I actually don’t mind almond butter. And cashew butter (yes, there is such a thing!) isn’t bad either. Now, I won’t go dipping my apples into a 1/2 cup of the stuff….
But for smoothies, the occasional drizzle, and just about any recipe, they’ll do. And (thankfully), Smalls and Ish are just as happy with my substitution of almond butter, which is why I had to find a way to modify one of my favorite smoothie recipes.
Thankfully, I easily subbed almond butter and raw cacao. And you know what? No one knew the difference. Win-win.
Chocolate Almond Butter Smoothie
Ingredients
- 10 oz coconut water or non-dairy milk
- 1 Tablespoon Organic Cinnamon Flax Oil
- 3-4 pitted dates (soaked if they're dry)
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons Raw Cacao Powder
- 1 banana, frozen and broken into pieces
- 1 Tablespoon almond butter (I love nuts 'n more because of its high protein content)
Instructions
- Toss everything into your Vitamix and blend away! The frozen bananas give this smoothie a nice creaminess, and the almond-cinnamon combination is really yummy.
