Tips for Staying Active During the Holidays

Know that the holidays are coming up, it’s important to talk about ways to stay active during the holiday months. It’s so tempting to break down and eat everything in sight, but is that really what’s best for ourselves and our family?

I get it, I totally do. The holidays are a rough time for eating healthy. And if you happen to live in an area of the world where it’s cold outside, it’s even harder to get motivated to go outside and get moving. The good news is that there are ways that you can stay active and stay fit, even during the holiday months.

If I can do it, you can do it – so let’s just all agree to do it together and rock the holiday blues!

Tips for Staying Active During the Holidays

First and foremost, understand that the holiday time doesn’t mean that you have to say “no” to the food and goods. All it means is that you need to limit your eating at times and implement moderation instead.

Try a bite, not a whole piece

Even though this isn’t necessarily about staying active, it’s one of my favorite tips to implement during the holiday season.

You can try a bite of anything and everything if you want, and sometimes, that’s just the taste that you need. Once you have a bite or two, just try to walk away.

It’s the sitting down and eating bite after bite that get us all in trouble.

Get up and go for a walk

If you’re feeling hungry, you need to get those legs moving. Even if you’re surrounded by family and friends, why not just invite them on a walk to join you instead?

This is one of my go-to things to do, especially during family gatherings. Once I bring up the topic of everyone taking a walk, I always have people jump on board to head out the door with me.

Set up a dedicated space to work out in your home

Going outside when it’s freezing just doesn’t sound appealing. So instead of doing that, why not set up your own space in your garage or basement that you can get your workout in without having to bundle up for the freezing outdoors.

Even if it’s just a place that you can stretch or do yoga, it’s better than doing nothing!

Make a list and stick to it

I’m not talking about a “naughty or nice list” for the holidays…I’m talking about a list of your goals that are going to hold you accountable. This means that you can easily create a list of activities that you can do daily and then have it to look at so that you’ll actually get it done.

Join a gym

If all else fails and you can’t find motivation at home, consider joining a gym instead. While this does cost money, it just might be the motivation that you need to keep your body moving.

I know that anytime I tie anything financial to my health and bank account, I’m way more apt to do it rather than not. Find a gym that is close enough to your house that you’ll actually go and then create a plan and stick with it.

As you can tell, it doesn’t have to be hard to create a plan to stay active during the holiday months. The hardest part, truthfully, is saying “no” to all the food and sweets. If you can do that and incorporate a few minutes of moving yourself and your body every single day, you’ll find that you’ll get through the holiday months without any issues at all!
