4 Ways to Get Your Kids Involved In Fitness

As we head into winter,  I’ve been thinking about ways that we can stay active as a family. Getting kids involved in fitness is so important to me.

I have been really good about getting up at 5:00 a.m. to start our day this month (I KNOW!), and since the kiddos have some activities, I really don’t want to enroll them in more…

…but I also want them to stay active, so I have come up with some creative ways to get your kids involved in fitness. I can’t wait to share with you.

Because let’s face it, exercise is vital for our health, but most of us don’t make fitness an essential part of our regular routine, which isn’t the best way to model healthy behavior for our kids.

I’m determined to change that.

4 Ways To Get Your Kids Involved In Fitness

Half of the struggle is the fact that nobody looks forward to the idea of another exhausting, boring workout. Fortunately, working out and getting fit doesn’t have to be a struggle. On the contrary, exercise can be a ton of fun. And the best part? There are plenty of ways to easily get the whole family involved and have a blast while breaking a sweat.

Here are just a few ideas you can try to make fitness more fun for the whole family:

Build an obstacle course in your backyard.

Have you ever watched American Ninja Warrior or another similar obstacle-based show? If so, use that as your inspiration and come up with a creative obstacle course in your backyard for the family to conquer.

A quick Google search will give you plenty of inspiration and ideas – it all depends on how much money you want to put into it and how extravagant you want to go! Time each member of your family as they navigate the course. Then post your scores on the fridge to serve as motivation for next time!

Take a family bike ride.

Going on a bike ride together can be a great way to have a blast with the whole family. Strap on your helmets and hit a local trail, or throw the bikes into the car and head to a new destination for a change of scenery.

Don’t forget to keep a first-aid kit (or at least a few bandages) on hand to address any spills or scrapes, and stop often for water breaks if the weather is warm! This is one of the best physical activities for kids and adults!

Go on a hike.

Live near a decent hiking trail? Lace-up your hiking boots and enjoy a hike with your loved ones. Pick a trail with a difficulty level suited for your family. You don’t want to stop a mile in when you’re too exhausted to go any further if you intended to hike a five-mile loop!

Make a positive impact on your community by bringing a few bags and collecting litter as you hike. Study up on trees and birds beforehand and see who can correctly identify the most. This is a fun way to have fit kids.

Have a dance party!

Dancing is a great way to squeeze in a workout that doesn’t even feel like work! Let your little ones choose the tunes, or throw on the family’s favorite go-to playlist. Then you all can boogie down in the comfort of your living room. Use your smartphones to record the action and make a music video. You’ll laugh at later, or see who can come up with the most creative (and calorie-burning!) moves.
