Eye Health is Important + 4 Things to Watch For

Y’all, I literally wouldn’t know where I would be if I didn’t have my glasses. My kid wouldn’t know where he would be if he didn’t have his!

Many of our kiddos are going back to school soon and they need to have good vision. They are constantly using their vision in the classroom and outside. If they can’t see, how are they going to learn how to read?!?

Last year, Smalls was having the hardest time at school. He was having trouble seeing the whiteboard, his grades were slipping, and his behavior was all over the place. He even walked into a wall… Y’all, if that wasn’t a sign, I don’t know what is.

We took Smalls to see an optometrist and they said his vision was completely fine. So, we researched other solutions but came up empty. We had no clue what it could be.

We decided to get a second opinion two months later and guess what… He basically couldn’t see the hand in front of his face, let alone the white board! Well, looks like it’s time to pick out some glasses.

And, while he was getting his exam, I decided to go ahead and have my eyes checked out, too. Guess what? It was time for me to get glasses as well.

Eye Health is Important

We often focus on the healthy aspects of our body weight, hair, and skin… but what about our eyes? Eyes need to be taken care of too!

The American Optometric Association recommends having your eyes examined by an eye doctor every year from about the age of three.

Age 3!

We need to be the best examples for our kids and show them how important it is to take care of our eyes.

If you suspect that your child (or you!) may need to have their vision checked out, don’t be me. Don’t wait. A good optometrist is fun and my boys seriously loved their exams (thanks, JCPenney Optical!).

Here are some things to look for if you suspect vision problems:

  • Squinting
  • Getting REALLY close to screens, papers, and books
  • Eye rubbing
  • Tilting the head side to side

If you notice any of those, it’s probably a good idea to get a professional opinion. And, glasses are the cool thing nowadays.
