Super Easy Lotion Bar Recipe

Let me start by saying that I have an insane love for LUSH lotion bars (or massage bars as they call them). They’re dreamy, natural, so good for you…and insanely expensive. And I can apply the perfect amount of lotion without being a goopy mess. Plus that cute tin!

I like to think that I’m fairly handy. But when it comes to crafty…not so much. This girl is seriously craft impaired, so I’ve always shied away from making my own soaps, lotions, and more. Obviously, I’m trying to conquer that fear right here, today.

I just couldn’t stomach spending another $12.00 on another lotion bar. That’s a lot of money for a bar that I have to replace each month (I use them all.the.time), especially since hubby and I have decided to board the budget train once again, starting now.

Obviously, my lotion bar obsession had to go…or did it? I know that you can make your own lotions and potions. Heck, I’ve successfully mastered my face wash recipe, and I make rollers all the time…so what was I scared of?

No clue! Y’all-these lotion bars are easy-peasy! Yes, you may need to purchase a few things (in bulk), but you’ll have the ingredients to make your own time and time again (and it’s a LOT cheaper than buying them at LUSH). Before you get going making any lotion bar recipes, you’ll want to pick up a few things:

Ingredients for Lotion Bar Recipe

Directions for Lotion Bar Recipe

  1. Melt the first three ingredients in a double boiler or candle making a pitcher (my preference-I have this one), stirring gently.
  2. Once everything is melted and well combined, add the vitamin E and your essential oils and gently stir using a clean spoon.
  3. Carefully pour your lotion bars into your mold(s). This is exactly why I love my candle making pitcher!
  4. If you’re in a hurry, you can place your molds in the freezer or refrigerator to speed up cooling.
  5. Once cooled, pop your lotion bars out. If you used a large mold (my preference), simply use a crinkle cutter to cut your bar into a more manageable size.

Lotion bars make a great gift and are always appreciated in my experience. You could even make cute labels and pour the lotion bar recipe into these twist up containers so that you can take them on the go.

Other Scents For Lotion Bars

If you’re not a fan of Lavender and Neroli essential oils, that’s okay! Here are some other awesome combinations that you can try (just use the same base and change out the oils):

If you love the idea of lotion bars, but hate the idea of making them (or you just don’t want to buy a pound of beeswax), I found a great shop called MadeOn. They make all kinds of lotion bars, soaps, baby and hair products that are natural and good for you. Plus, they’re a heck of a lot cheaper than that other place. Go check them out!

Hi, Jackie! I’m in Houston so I feel for you! I have not left these outside for an extended period of time, so I’m not sure!

They will at high enough temperatures. I don’t remember the melting point of beeswax however it is the highest melting point. Shea butter is around 85 degrees though.

Thank you so much for recipe! Do you use a similar metal tin to keep it in? Do you know where I’d find one?
    Thanks so much!

Hi, Melissa! I actually use a tin I got at LUSH…you can purchase them separately if you like. You may also want to check out Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

Hello! That sounds like a lot of essential oil (80 total drops)! I know that these oils come in very small containers and the good ones are pricey. How many drops do you normally get out of one bottle?

    • Brea on October 27, 2016 at 6:23 pm

Hi, Angel! Yes it is! In a Young Living bottle, it really depends on the size. A 5-ml bottle will contain between 80-100 drops of essential oil, while a 15 ml bottle contains 250-300 drops. Let me know if you have questions!

    • Brea on November 1, 2016 at 6:28 pm

Depending on how you cut them 3-6 🙂
